“My supervisor is the queen of micro-managing!” “I’m doing the work of three people and only getting paid for one.” “Why won’t he listen to my suggestions? “My boss is so cranky!” “If they would just ask me how to improve sales, I could tell them.” “Man, I can’t wait ’til Friday at five!”

If you have said or thought of any—or all—of these comments, you may be a closet entrepreneur! If you are a person who likes to organize, operate, and take risks, you are an entrepreneur. If the “take risks” part of the definition scares you or has kept you from fulfilling your destiny as a business owner—why?

In elementary school you were told how smart you were, in high school you were too cool to be smart, and in college you realized that there would always be someone smarter than you.

Now…now you know that being smart isn’t enough. You need to be wise.

“It is no longer enough to be smart—all the technological tools in the world add meaning and value only if they enhance our core values, the deepest part of our heart. Who hasn’t thought about having a large amount of money to do with what you want. Would you buy a new house, boat, motorcycle, go on a long vacation to anywhere exotic? Or would you expand your business, invest in new technology, hire that PR whiz kid?

“The real source of wealth and capital in this new era is not material things…it is the human mind, the human spirit, the human imagination, and our faith in the future.” —Steve Forbes

Hold on! Is “getting by” really the best we can or should be doing? How about going beyond merely existing and living lives full of excitement, love, adventure, peace, fun, joy, and happiness? How about being glad to be alive—waking up each morning with a smile on our face and a song in our heart?

Sound corny and unrealistic? There are more people than you realize who live this idyllic daily reality. There are people who choose not to fit into the “if it bleeds it leads” mentality of the media that hounds us 24-7 with negativity and exaggerations. There really are those who are in charge of their lives and make decisions that result in productive business dealings, content family relations, meaningful spiritual encounters, and financial security.

All this talk about personal development and self-awareness makes me wonder—wonder if it’s all worth it.

Does finding my “authentic” self mean that I was unauthentic all along? Does improving my self-knowledge mean that I never really knew myself? Does identifying my potential mean that I’ve been wasting my time so far in life?

Actually, the wisdom in defining and executing a personal growth or development plan is significant. From building or renewing your identity and talents, you will uncover things about yourself that will improve your quality of life.

Have you ever thought about learning how to speak Spanish—or Russian? Did you ever wonder why you were drawn toward Ireland and all things Irish? When you think about changing jobs, is there one career that you’ve secretly wanted to try? Are you really good at something but you’ve never taken the time to develop it?
